I asked Chris Lovito if there's anything that would really surprise us about John White.
12:57
I'm going to open Pandora's box.
13:00
When John White was 16 years old, and this was proved because they found his diary, John dressed in his mother's clothes, stole his mother's car, and him and his friend dressed as women and was driving around town and got pulled over by the police.
13:19
Now you could imagine it being in the late 40s, early 50s, that two young boys are dressed in their mother's clothes driving around in a car, but since John's family was very well known and very upper class in the neighborhood, he got away with it.
13:34
But what a devastating experience it was for him.
13:38
So hence, possibly the thing of dressing in your mother's clothes when you're gay should not be done.
13:46
And I think the trauma of that may have leaked into what he feels and how he handled that situation.
12:16
In 1988, a benefit for God's Love We Deliver was hosted by Gloria De Man at her home on the bay, called Reflections.
12:25
Joan Rivers was an amazing person, and she was at a tough time in her life.
12:31
She had just lost her husband.
12:32
It was 1984.
12:34
So she was still grieving over that.
12:36
And during the time with her, Peter Allen was performing.
12:40
And it's the moment that sticks in my head the most with her about how cordial she was, how polite she was, how friendly and open she was.
13:23
Chris remembers walking Joan to the stage right after Peter Allen finished his set.
1:27
If you put your hands above your head, if you were dancing to a disco tune, which
1:31
was just starting around that time, you could touch the lights.
1:34
That's
1:35
how low the ceiling was in the sandpiper.
1:36
It was a band box of a disco, meaning a square box with windows along each side that opened.
1:43
There were wooden shuttered windows that were held open by a wooden stick.
1:49
And that allowed the heat to escape because there was no air conditioning.
1:53
And it was really sweaty in there.
