Is the housing crisis fuelling anti-immigration tension?
1:47
4:52

Martin GeisslerHOST
Can you start off for us, please, by telling us what, what happened in Possilpark? What's, what's the essence of this story, Possilpark in Glasgow?
C
1:54Chris ClementsGUEST
Well, it, it, it was a, a derelict block of tenement flats that were being renovated, um, for housing.
C
2:03Chris ClementsGUEST
Um, it has been the early stage of renovation, and recently they've actually been the site of a couple of protests in, in that part of town tied in with some of the, sort of the right-wing anti-immigration protests that were taking place across Glasgow at that point.
C
2:17Chris ClementsGUEST
And the, the rumor, the local rumor mill had said that these flats were intending to be for refugee housing or asylum seeker housing.
C
2:27Chris ClementsGUEST
Very similar on one of the same, the same day that they, there was a protest outside this block of flats, there was also a protest outside a, a derelict care home which a company had applied to renovate and bring back into use as well, and the rumor about that had been that there was gonna be asylum seekers being housed in there.
C
2:43Chris ClementsGUEST
Then a few nights ago, there was a fire at the block of flats, and now that's being treated as a willful fire raising, that someone did it deliberately, and the Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney had suggested that this was the result of some of the misinformation that had been flying around about that particular block.

Martin GeisslerHOST
No matter who you are, no matter which country you were born in, whether you're from here all your life or not, right?
C
4:56Chris ClementsGUEST
Well, the, the, the actual, the, the thing that prioritizes you actually is whether or not you're threatened with homelessness in the housing allocation policy.
BONUS: The hidden technology behind Wimbledon
2:44

Katie PrescottHOST
What does it mean for the thousands of fans who come to the grounds here, but also who are, who are watching on, on telly?
C
2:51Chris ClementsGUEST
Wimbledon, you know, we're 149 years old, and we've got a, a phenomenal heritage and reputation built off the experiences of hundreds of millions of people all round the world, perhaps even billions.
C
3:04Chris ClementsGUEST
So it's important that as we're looking at how we build out our technology and how we use technology to support us, we're thinking about all of those different people and how they experience, uh, the championships in different ways.
C
3:14Chris ClementsGUEST
So that's from people, fans watching at home in every corner of the globe through to guests that come on site through to, to really important people like our players and members of the media, like yourself, been very much thinking about all of those different groups and how we can create these amazing journeys for them.

... we are, we are, we are making, we are making significant investment over the next few years, uh, in terms of both the, the mobile infrastructure and, and Wi-Fi, um, in and around the grounds.
C
9:31Chris ClementsGUEST
Um, but that's also about a lot around our, kind of, core data architecture, and making, making sure we've got in place those data foundations to be able to underpin these experiences.
C
9:41Chris ClementsGUEST
So how do you go from a, a website which gets tens of thousands of hits a day year-round to something which is then getting millions and millions and millions of, of people that are using it during the championships? And to do that, you've got to work quite hard to make sure you've got that infrastructure in place.

mediums that let's say so how important has it been to have IBM supporting you on that journey but then also I guess looking at like what that journey has been you know over the last five years or so and I guess you know what's potentially coming next too
C
8:56Chris ClementsGUEST
I think, like I said before, having those long term partnerships is amazing because it also builds a level of trust to be able to push and challenge each other, which I think is actually extremely important in any genuine partnership.
C
9:11Chris ClementsGUEST
And I don't think there's very many sports kind of commercial partnerships that have the ability to do that.
C
9:16Chris ClementsGUEST
And it is a genuine partnership, like they are actually embedded in everything that we do.
C
9:21Chris ClementsGUEST
You speak to a lot of other kind of sports organisations and they're amazed when we talk to them about what IBM actually do for us, because they are working with us on the design of our new website and app.

so maybe we could look at I guess how you are A interacting with your global audience year round and obviously there's a number of different majors across the year that you guys interact with on a yearly basis as well but then B looking at I guess what that process looks like from this is something that we think we might want to do and maybe it comes after the championship where you sit down as a team and say we think we could have done X, Y and Z better or here's something that we want to try for next year so then from idea all the way through to you know trialing and testing to then rolling out we'd love to kind of get in your brain a little bit around what that looks like
