61:07
So walk me through the decision to do that.
61:09
Yeah, exactly.
61:10
You know, Proven in Blood actually started off as a non-fictional concept after I read an amazing book by Daniel James Brown.
61:20
It's called Facing the Mountain.
61:23
He thoroughly researched the 100th and the 442.
61:28
And after reading Facing the Mountain, I said, wow, I don't think I can do any better than this.
61:33
So it turned me towards the fictional realm.

17 MINS LATER

78:43
Why, Chris? What's going on down there? What's happening?
15:38
So give us the overview of the book and so that we can then dive into some of the issues that are near and dear to your heart that you deal with in the book.
15:48
This is a historical fictional account of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
15:55
But It is all based on true stories, on true events.
16:01
The fictionalized pieces are mostly focused around the primary characters, but many of the other characters are real people.
16:13
The historical pieces are true to fact.
16:16
And so when we open Proven in Blood, when the story opens on the baseball diamond over at UC Berkeley, we see through the protagonist's eyes daniel tanaka pearl harbor happens and he is an american of japanese descent who was born here but then all of a sudden he is labeled as an enemy alien by the united states government along with 120 000 other innocent americans of japanese descent And so we see Daniel go from the baseball diamond to relocation center to incarceration camp out in Arkansas.
17:01
You know, growing up, many Americans know these as internment camps.

26 MINS LATER

43:23
Correct, exactly.
speaker_6SOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
24:41
happening.
24:41
Right.
24:41
You're just told you need to report.
24:44
And then the next thing you know, you're on a train or you're on a bus to a concentration camp.
24:50
And 10 of these camps spread out through America.
24:54
You know, they were specifically chosen to be geographically desolate and isolated because President Roosevelt and others were concerned that American citizens of Japanese descent were somehow loyal to Japan and communicating with the Japanese government, which was patently false.
25:13
Right.
27:19
I don't know if this is accurate or if it was just kind of a wives' tale, but I heard that they sent them to Europe rather than the Asian Pacific theater because they were afraid that people might mistake them for... for the enemy is that is that an accurate statement do you see anything about like that when you're doing your research
34:31
All right, take, take it away 'cause it's a Kickstarter program.
34:34
Yes.
34:35
So, uh, I have written a World War II novel.
34:39
Um, it's a fictional historical account, uh, based on true stories of the, what's dubbed the Purple Heart Battalion, and that is the name of the book.
34:48
Uh, the Purple Heart Battalion is a, uh, segregated US Army unit, um, uh, Japanese Americans.
34:54
Uh, they are the 100th Infantry Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team.
35:00
And these men, many of them volunteered from the incarceration camps here in America during World War II, and they volunteered for the Army.
38:54
So p- so people could go shoot with Top Shot Chris.
