So can you tell us what you were doing before you started farming, and how you came to start a farm?

Yes.

In the early '70s, I was an assistant professor of political science at the University of Buffalo, State University of Buffalo, and that was a time of general tumult in American education and American politics, and it led one to think about other ways of organizing society, I guess you'd say.

To, you know, uh, people were making a large scale ideological critique of whatever America had become, or whatever they claimed it had become.

And so one of the parts of that critique that interested me was people studying so-called intentional communities, kibbutzim, and communes, which are contemporary, and kibbutzim were, which were not.

And then what you might call partial category intentional communities, like free schools, are an undertaking that looked at just one aspect of society that you might rebuild.

And I like this because it was small scale, it was something you might actually do and not just read about, and it was, it was non-violent.
