So why do you think long-term marriages break down? What are some of the factors that impact that?
21:03
Well, so I have very strong opinions about this.
21:06
And for me, the biggest reason I believe that long-term marriages don't often happen is because so many people have unrealistic expectations of what a marriage should be.
21:18
There's, you know, there's this whole romantic notion that we're always going to A, be attracted to each other.
21:24
We're always going to Get along.
21:25
We're always going to find commonality.
21:27
We're always going to be able to, you know, get to the root of a problem and move through it and move past it.

explore that.
4:42
So how important is it? How much of the process is done under the cover of darkness?
4:50
Well, exactly.
4:51
All of that is so important for people to understand.
4:54
And, you know, Jessica's lived experience is very different than mine.
4:57
My mom was independent outside of the household.
5:00
She did have a job.
5:01
She did, you know, quote unquote, have means.

Chantal.

What do you see as the biggest differences between, I guess, old school parenting and what's going on today?
35:41
I see the biggest difference is that, so when I was young, sure, I had a key to the house when I was nine and 10 years old.
35:49
I was like my own little landlord, which is kind of crazy when you think about it.
35:55
But there was a beauty in that because there was a trust that parents had with their children.
35:59
There was an inherent understanding that my kids got this, whereas now there's this inherent understanding that my kid can't do anything.
36:08
My kid is completely incompetent and therefore I must do everything.
36:13
So you've got such opposite ends of the spectrum.
38:16
Don't
36:32
I guess the trick is not to sort of expect your partner to fill the gaps that are now there because your kids are gone, right?
36:41
You know what? I talk about this ad nauseum in my book.
36:45
The first book is Raising Your Kids Without Losing Your Cool.
36:47
And I tackle this topic immediately.
36:49
And that book was written for parents, like people who are couples, and they're thinking about having children.
36:54
And then, you know, they do get pregnant and the baby comes.
36:57
And that book, Raising Your Kids Without Losing Your Cool, goes from the concept of where we want to be parents.
