Democracy Now!' 's Maria Ines Teresena spoke with some of the visitors, as well as Cesar Espinosa, executive director of FIO.
25:45
Today we are at the memorial, the makeshift memorial, the community memorial, the community shrine that has been set up for Mr. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo.
25:53
Apparently, from what we know, Mr. Lorenzo was coming this way and then he U-turned and his van ended up in this very spot.
26:01
And unfortunately, this is where he took his last breaths.
26:09
As you can see, this is in the heart of Magnolia Park here in Houston, Texas.
26:15
One of the first Latino communities here in Houston.
26:18
People of the second, third generation.
32:16
She was outside the funeral home because recording was not permitted inside.
32:22
My name is Cesar Espinosa, and I am the executive director of FIELD.
32:25
The feeling inside is it paints a picture of a man who loved his family, who loved his kids, who loved life.
32:31
And his life should have never been taken away on that fateful Tuesday morning, July 7th, you know, three days after our Independence Day.
32:41
on the streets of Magnolia Park.
32:44
He should still be alive today at this time right now.
32:46
He should be having dinner at home.
11:11
And I'm curious, this particular case, what it means to the Mexican immigrant community right now.
11:17
I think one of the reasons why there's one of these cases stand out, uh, is because it, it is our story.
11:23
It is our, it is our deals and our dads and our, and our, uh, friends and our neighbors and people that we interact with every day.
11:33
So, and any one of those folks could be, could be Lorenzo.
11:38
Uh, I, I, I, as soon as I heard what had happened, uh, I thought about my stepdad who drives a work truck, who is a U.S. citizen, but he looks very much like Mr. Lorenzo.
11:53
And I remember a memory got triggered of a couple of years ago where my dad was standing waiting outside for an Uber at five in the morning to take him to work.
12:05
Because his work truck was down and one of our neighbors called the cops on him because he was a brown man standing outside of his house waiting for an Uber at five in the morning.

8 MINS LATER

20:07
How have you been able to mobilize folks with you to take that kind of strategy?
37:20
But he had no idea what was going on.
37:24
Amy, we hear this all the time.
37:26
People are saying, well, why don't people comply? Why don't they why don't they just stop? But I want people to put themselves in these immigrants shoes or these people.
37:37
They all of a sudden they are being approached by unmarked vehicles.
37:42
These vehicles many times often start ramming vehicles, trying to get them to stop, trying to get them, force them to stop.
37:52
And when people jump out, they're not wearing insignia, you know, saying federal agents or ICE or a badge.
38:01
They're wearing a lot of the times plain clothing with vests that just say police.
38:39
Where are they? Who are they?
37:20
But he had no idea what was going on.
37:24
