And I want to smack those people hard.
7:31
I want to circle back a little to what you're saying about the thigh gap, because one of the things that I go over in the book is the transition from heroin chic in the 90s, which is something that I witnessed as a child and teenager seeing the super skinny models basically looking emaciated to the thin spoke blogs of the early mid 2000s, where you saw things like the thigh gap really take off.
7:59
It's not that these models from the 90s and have thigh gaps, but as a concept, hashtag thigh gap.
8:04
That was a thing that was really tied to those Personal blogs or Pinterest boards, things like that, as well as other other things, maybe less well known than the thigh gap, like bikini bridges.
8:20
That's where your hip bones kind of there.
8:22
You could imagine a line that would unite one to the other without it like bending or curving.
8:27
So if it's straight, that's when you have a bikini line.

If you would like to dumb that down for me, please, as someone without a PhD.
31:10
How, how does, how does philosophy generate and sustain friction, and how does that relate to its mission as being something that we can't outsource through LLMs?
31:22
Yeah.
31:22
I've been thinking about that a lot just in the last few days because, um, I do a unit in my Intro to Philosophy course on education, and, uh, we had a closing discussion.
31:35
I often do it around the, like, actual thinkers that we've studied, but I just thought, you know, we're just gonna have an open conversation about how people are using AI these days, whether it's in their daily lives, like structuring their workouts or creating schedules for, you know, for their work and, uh, education, you know, like their college life, or actually in academic settings.
31:57
So I learned that, like, roughly 85%, it seems, of my intro students were putting the readings in an LLM like ChatGPT to, um, you know, to do them, quote unquote.
32:11
So, um, you know, that makes me rethink, like, what's the purpose of my reading? What are we doing as educators in philosophy? And tomorrow we're doing some Aristotle, and we're gonna have some close reading in class.
32:24
So at least we'll do a little friction there in terms of at least pushing, uh, people into, like, developing that reading skill for as long as we can cultivate that in this, you know, era.

Yeah.
