So if you had a couple of points of pointers, I should say, for med students, people listening who are considering going into medicine, considering how they can maybe get involved in policy or healthcare management, what would your wise words be?

Cedric DarkGUEST
One easy way if you want to get involved with policy stuff is joining the organization that I'm repping right now, Doctors for America.

Cedric DarkGUEST
And there's a lot of different impact areas that they have, whether it happens to be about gun violence, whether it happens to be access to care, women's health, etc., And there's just people that are trying to do advocacy.

Cedric DarkGUEST
And I would say sort of an unofficial motto is advocacy comes to people when we make it easy for them.

What does that mean, though, in practical terms for emergency room doctors, for nurses, for, uh, what procedures are approved and what they cost, and what patients experience when they walk into a hospital?

Cedric DarkGUEST
Well, for us, the, the big issue is we're gonna see everybody that walks in the door.

Cedric DarkGUEST
There's a federal law called EMTALA which tells every hospital and every emergency physician that no matter who walks in, no matter what's going on, anytime, uh, any, any, for anything that they come in, we will see you.

Cedric DarkGUEST
So if we diagnose you with cancer, are you going to be able to follow up with the oncologist and their clinic to get that cancer taken care of? If you come in for rectal bleeding, which we see co- we see often, and we say, "You need to go get a colonoscopy with a gastroenterologist," how many of our patients can do that? It's very difficult because in Harris County, about one in five people are uninsured.

Cedric DarkGUEST
And because we don't have the insurance coverage that we need in this country, you don't have access to all those specialists that are otherwise, uh, holding those slots open for people that can afford to pay them.
