So, Dr. Osborne, I just want to ask you open-ended, what sort of problems do you see most at the clinic with your dogs and cats?
16:58
Well, we see all kinds of problems.
17:00
Again, many of the problems are seasonal.
17:04
So when it's very hot outside, you know, you're in peak allergy season, as well as parasites, you know, fleas, excuse me, fleas, ticks.
17:16
and mosquitoes.
17:18
Not sure what the tick population is like in Utah.
17:23
But if it is an issue, ticks carry 10 different diseases, many of which are transmissible to you and I.

12 MINS LATER

29:01
Should we get a new pet? How best to proceed?
52:20
How do dogs work? Do they need the same amount of water?
52:24
I think they need the same amount or maybe even a little bit more.
52:28
So if you are going for a walk or whatever, it's always a good idea to take along some fresh water for your pup.
52:36
If you're at the beach, for example, remember that salt water is not an acceptable substitute for drinking water.
52:43
And if you decide to go swimming, remember that not all pets can swim.
52:48
You can get your pet doggy swimming lessons.
52:51
And if you're boating, remember they make all kinds of great dog life jackets.
54:59
Your pet really has no way of telling you that they've walked too far or they're tired, do they?
46:54
What about pets or the drugs? Are they similar drugs that they would give human beings?
47:00
We have a drug called Aniapril, which is a selegiline.
47:05
It can help to control the signs, not really going to reverse it.
47:11
There are some antioxidant supplements available.
47:16
that, um, will just help to improve cognition.
47:20
If you will.
47:21
I think one of the biggest things people can do when they have elderly pets, um, is, is try to prevent it.
48:31
Are you saying that seniors shouldn't have dogs then?
11:11
And so I'm glad we're having this podcast today because it wouldn't even occur to me to tell the vet that somebody in the household uses GLP-1 so that they could take that into consideration when diagnosing.
11:26
know absolutely uh i think whenever your cat in this case um it is not right vomiting diarrhea not eating for example for a couple of days give your give your vet a call uh and talk to him or her honestly about what the underlying cause might be um if someone in the home is currently using glps mention it to the doctor because we can best help patients when the owners are as honest as possible with us.
12:04
If your vet's not around, there's plenty of animal emergency centers.
12:10
Certainly people can call a pet poison hotline like the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.
12:20
And again, if somebody in the home is using GLPs, just grab the packaging and bring it with you just to help the doctor help your animal try to get better as quickly as possible.
12:36
And I'll also mention that you should not try to induce vomiting if you do think that this might be the culprit.
15:23
Are there long-term health consequences for those cats or is it mainly just acute symptoms that need to be watched for?
15:35
I think in most cases it's an acute situation that, again, stop the vomiting, curb the diarrhea, give fluids so that we're rehydrated, make sure the blood sugar is good.
