So how should a farmer adjust irrigation when water quality is poor or too saline? And when is it a concern when it comes to irrigation?
6:58
Funny you asked this question.
7:00
I just had a presentation last week in the Uniondale area on leaching requirements for onion seed producers that specifically spoke about this topic.
7:09
It's a very technical topic and it takes a lot of time to explain so, but I'm going to try to explain it as simple as possible.
7:16
To keep the answer short, I want to say a leaching fraction during irrigation for onion crops requires will only be required if the EC in the water is greater than 80 millisiemens per meter.
7:28
There are obviously formulas that can be used to calculate how much water should be irrigated to manage salts within the root zone.
7:36
For example, if the EC in the water is 120 millisiemens per meter, which is 40 millisiemens per meter above the limit, it will require an additional 5% in water volume that needs to be applied at the field.

So like what are the main advantages of thin wall drip for seed farmers and especially looking at installation, removal, labor, as well as costs of it?
