Brooklyn Heights

I've romanticized New York in general, but, like, I really romanticize, like, Williamsburg and, like, Brooklyn and, like, I, like, there's certain shows, like Bored to Death, that was, like, filmed in Brooklyn, and I'm like, "Oh, it'd be so nice to live on one of these streets." But, like, those areas, it's much more difficult to get to Manhattan, um, which would be an issue.

And the places that are easily accessible to Manhattan, like Dumbo, like I, I do wanna go back, and I wanna go look at Brooklyn Heights.

Yeah, I wouldn't be against moving to Dumbo, Brooklyn Heights, Vinegar Hill area.

I love Williamsburg.

I take my friends there when they come.

His seven-year-old son Darwin lives here in New York.

When Bjarke was buying a home in Brooklyn Heights, a historic neighborhood with an elevated promenade, he heard about plans to renovate the BQE, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

The BQE is a famously bad stretch of urban highway that runs beneath the promenade.

The city's renovation plan called for a temporary highway built at promenade level.

You create 10 hectares of new parkland, and there's even a few plots where you could develop, uh, some, uh, some homes that could maybe offset the cost of doing it.

So is this actually happening or it's still a plan?

We ended up presenting it at a Brooklyn Heights community meeting, and I think it's, it's the only, only [laughs] time where we did a community meeting where we got an applause.

There's 59 community districts.

If you report average response time, let's say in Brooklyn, Might be huge variations between Brooklyn Heights and East New York, so might be a great thing for you to look at.

What all is supposed to be reported and specifically? So, Brian, you gave me 30 seconds.

Jim Epstein did a fantastic documentary 10 years ago, right? When Nicole Hannah-Jones was putting her five-year-old daughter on the cover of New York Magazine, bragging about sending her to this crappy school.

Jim did a documentary about that crappy school and also how the other nearby rich school in Brooklyn Heights were trying to change their district borders in the name of desegregation.

And how some charter schools that had bubbled up in between were like, hey, we can kind of bring everybody in here if you want.

And I think that's an important backdrop to recognize that people have been of good faith, have been trying to work on the issue of improving educational outcomes, particularly of lower income students for a long time.
