What possessed you to take on this project?

I was at the time, this is the late 1990s, and I was looking for a project.

I was in the middle of transitioning from an academic to a full-time golf writer.

I have a PhD in political science.

I know my way into libraries.

I had written a book on U.S. nuclear defense strategy.

And so I kind of was comfortable with archives.

It's okay [laughs]
