Bound

Over on the Australian side of things, I've got a whole bunch of box sets from Imprint Films here.

The first one, the one that I have watched out of all of these, is Bound from the Wachowskis.

I'm just on a Wachowski kick right now.

Speed Racer is still one of my favorite physical media releases of the year so far.

And I have a list that is running and always changing and updating over on Letterboxd.

I want to say I'm up to like 85-ish new release physical media releases that came out in 2026 that I'm ranking from best to least best.

Bound is up there, man.

Bound, I had such a fun time with this movie.

When Dino De Laurentiis greenlit Bound, the Wachowski siblings' directorial debut, Lillian Lana thought they might have to tiptoe around certain plot points with the legendary Italian producer.

Dino was like, this is the first woman.

She is lesbian.

They wanted to direct.

What are you doing? Isn't it obvious? Yes.

That's Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly connecting in the Wachowskis' 1996 crime thriller, Bound.

A lesbian noir wasn't an obvious commercial proposition at the time, but the low-budget film gave the Wachowskis a chance to prove themselves, which opened the door to much bigger projects.

Yes.

So, fun little queer movie.

I honestly was expecting to find, like...

I thought I would...

And I was like, wait a minute.

I...

I thought we picked this movie because we're on the last week of our cycle that we've kind of assigned for ourselves, where this is the week that we would pick something directed by women and or queer people.

So I was like, wait a minute.

So I presented to my patrons here at And The Runner Up Is a list of 15 films with women leads who did not earn Oscar nominations.

I feel like Gene Siskel, I remember seeing when Siskel and Ebert reviewed Bound.

[laughs] The movie by the Wachowskis.
