The place we're headed is Lee County, in the middle of the state, about an hour east of Columbia and a little north of Interstate 20.

The county seat is Bishopville, and Bishopville is a cotton town.

It's got a main street with brick storefronts, a cotton museum, a water tower, and a few thousand people.

And for most of its life, the biggest thing that ever happened there was the price of a bale.

Then came the summer of 1988, and for about two months, Bishopville was the most famous small town in America, and the reason was a strip of wet ground a few miles outside of town called Scape Ore Swamp.

Scape Ore isn't a lake and it isn't a river.

It's a swamp, the way they use the word in that part of the country.

Nobody at the wildlife department could tell the sheriff what had made them, and that answer coming from the state did more to keep the story alive than anything Chris Davis had said.

17-year-old Christopher Davis claimed a scaly green creature with glowing red eyes and three-fingered claws attacked his car.

Okay, the event centered around Scape or Swamp near Bishopville, South Carolina.

Witnesses described a bipedal beast standing seven to nine feet tall with green scaly skin, red eyes, and massive three-toed footprints.

This is so maddening, isn't it? One of the suspects here, Armante Johnson, contacted one of the other suspects, and the goal was to have a new key reprogrammed for the dumped Infiniti.

Jackson then set up a buyer in South Carolina, driving his girlfriend's car as an escort while Johnson drove the stolen Infiniti down to Bishopville, South Carolina.

Police said the two sold the getaway car in Bishopville for $1,200 and split the money.

Jail records show that Jackson was arrested Tuesday, September 29th, charged with accessory after the fact of murder.
