He killed it?

One day we found Phoenix, um, beside the fence, but just pushed through the bottom of the fence on our property.

And if you looked across his driveway at the end of his house, there was a big metal baseball bat leaning against the house.

Well, by that time we had attorneys, and, um, they said, "Take the cat and have it autopsied." And we did, and it had been killed by a blow, two blows to it.

But that was a part of him.

He not only killed the cat, but he wanted you to know how he did it.

And by leaving the bat, we knew, uh, what happened.

The neighbor had thrown trash on their property before, mostly little things, cans, cigarette butts, nothing interesting, nothing useful.

Uh, then they saw the flag that she had a previous conviction 10 years ago to do with, um, the marijuana, and that's what I talked to about Betty next, 'cause that's where they're looking now.

So, um, I asked him if I could tell you, and he goes, "Sure." [laughs] So, um, he was a prosecutor, and he's looked at Everly's record.

And so her first, she had two offenses for drugs.

The first one was she had paraphernalia, which was a misdemeanor.And then she was traveling in a car that was pulled over, and there was marijuana in the car.

Not necessarily hers, but because she's in the vehicle with it, it's all of theirs, you know? And he, he's like, "I'm just amazed that this has happened." He goes, "Paraphernalia and then this makes it a felony?" He goes, he goes, "We gotta look at that." And he said that the fel- that the misdemeanor wasn't even listed in the court case.

So he, he goes, there's some holes in there that he can poke at.

And then he said the next thing is-

So how did you get into this, Betty?

Uh, well, I'm originally a farm girl from Central California.

Unlike the other two lo- lovely ladies, I've never been much of a traveler.

Um, never considered moving up to Alaska, never even thought of Alaska.

It wasn't in, in, in my mind anywhere.

I'm just a little farm girl.

But in 2011, 10 I came up to visit my cousins who had moved up to Fairbanks, and, uh, so just came up to visit.

[laughs]

Among the victims to be partially compensated by HSBC is Betty, who lost $115,000 from her and her husband's joint mortgage account.

Well, we received a text from HSBC saying that our account has been hacked, and there was a, an, a number there.

We were panicking and called the number instead of, you know, checking to see that it's a valid HSBC number.

And when we spoke to them, it was a British accent, and he said that our account has been hacked, and we need to quickly go to the HSBC branch to block the account.

A few minutes into that call, I just had this thing that there's something not right about the talk, and we immediately called HSBC on our other phone to ask them to block the account.

And, uh, I called several times actually just to make sure that it has been done.

But after a few attempts, they couldn't identify us anymore.

But what are you hoping for?

Have you ever had, like, a friend over or a relative who didn't know what your dad's sneezes are like?

So I had my friend over this one time, and my dad sneezed, and she, like, covered her ears, and she was like, "Why is it so loud?"

[laughs] How did your dad respond to that?

He'll just be like, "Well, you guys, it's just my sneezes.

You just have to deal with it.

That's my thing.

Sneezing is my thing."
