And then, Sophia, I figured you could give us, uh, a summary of how the day went, how it was, uh, formatted, and then what the discussions were like.
3:30
Sure.
3:31
Well, uh, this whole effort kicked off because, um, it's been a longstanding problem within our field that there isn't one, uh, standardized operational definition for, uh, classifying people as having glaucoma or not, and this is especially problematic for scientific studies.
3:49
You can imagine being able to compare results across different epidemiological studies or clinical trials is very important, and when there isn't a, uh, standardized definition across these studies, the findings can sometimes be hard to interpret in the context of the different studies.
4:08
Th-the National Eye Institute, uh, being the primary sup-supporter of, uh, eye research in this country, saw this as a major problem and, um, decided to establish this workshop.
4:19
Um, and, uh, Sophia and I had the pleasure of, uh, working together with, uh, Michelle Ribar, who's a bioinformaticist, as well as Steven Henley from the NEI on this effort, uh, to begin to tackle this problem.
4:32
Um, and we know that it's a longstanding problem, um, and so we knew that we weren't be-- gonna be able to establish a, a definition, uh, in one afternoon.
