VA claims that they're only using AI up until the final decision is being issued.

And therefore, because there's somebody checking the very final decision, for adverse decisions at least, we are doing the right thing and we're using AI appropriately.

As a practitioner who's seen a lot of decisions that appear to be coming from a computer where the language in the decision doesn't make sense, it seems clear that whoever's doing the checking is not doing a great job in a lot of these instances.

And so to your question about what does transparency look like? I think that every decision where AI touches it, where it influences a particular direction of that decision, whether it's the final decision or not, needs to get some kind of disclosure.

Well, I think that there is a degree of that, right? But on the other hand...

The claims have to be adjudicated a certain way.

I think part of what we're seeing now is with the advent of artificial intelligence and how the Department of Veterans Affairs has been automating its systems, there is a degree of... kind of gray area, if not like completely opaque, where we don't know exactly how Department of Veterans Affairs is implementing its artificial intelligence or automation systems.

The agency sometimes conflates the two terms and sometimes it doesn't.

So it's hard on the outside to kind of know what they're doing.

But what I mean by that is if you were to take a, we don't know how the system is weighting evidence.

So what's some advice you can give a veteran right now that's suffering and is frustrated? What's the first moves that a veteran should be making?

Oh, what I mean is when I think about like history and I think about all the different areas where somebody might be white.

that contributed to America or might have, you know, white skin, I guess I would want to drill down into that a little bit more, but, you know, so our family's from Germanic, right? So we, we are largely from Germany, some other areas.

And so, I guess, to be honest with you, Jesse, it's not something I really thought a lot about.

Sometimes skin color comes into it if we have an issue of potential racism or something like that, which unfortunately happens still.
