always i've always admired those like they're just they're pretty
44:53
you know what what is i mean yeah those windows they are pretty but uh what is practical about those and what i miss because in my blacksmith shop we had one of those and now i have a german pattern anvil What I like about those, they have the whole...
45:07
Not the horn side, but the other side.
45:09
I don't know what you call that in English.
45:11
The devil horn? Yeah, possibly.
45:15
You have that with the London pattern as well.
45:16
But what those Styrian pattern anvils have is... a real edge so you have a a real wedge to the end whereas the london pattern and as far as i've seen them dull like with a one one inch height flat you know 90 degrees they uh the austrian pattern ends with an edge like and that is practical if you want to get in in there with with some pieces you know you have a you have kind of an edge uh like a sharp corner yeah yeah pretty sharp yeah yeah and it doesn't go down 90 degrees but like 100 what what is it 100 uh yeah a

And that was, that's, it's the only local anvil I've got that I, that I've, i like it i just like i said i don't even use it because i don't want to beat it up nice
6:25
I feel like what's wrong with that, though? I would
6:29
say that forging still can have also in knife making can make sense also in a scalability sense and in a, in a practical sense, but I'm totally with you that a lot of knife makers just use it for the, you know, romanticism around it, right.
6:45
That they, they, don't really need to do it.
6:49
They mainly do it for being able to say they have forged a piece, either that or for some superficial texturing or what have you.
6:59
But not for economic reasons, for example, or geometry reasons.
7:05
But I mainly had the idea to come on because I think there are a lot of knife makers, at least in the kitchen knife scene, that are actually using it for to to improve the geometry of a knife for example or to um you know do it in an economic way the way for example when i forge out a blade i i did the math on that and i i found it interesting that's why i thought we'll talk about it um when i would have a blade that is um what is six millimeters in thickness six millimeters out of the handle that is yeah quarter inch roundabout When I would stock removal a blade where it would come out of the handle with a quarter inch, six millimeters thick, I would have to use three times the material to stock removal that blade having that kind of distal taper.
7:57
Whereas I... only use one third of the material while forging it because I can spread the steel so far.

Now, here in the US, nobody sells that big of a knife grinder this is like a glass it's it's for doing glass work yeah the wet grinders like that and so i i'm gonna convert it into a knife grinder but i'm curious about the one that you have because tell me tell me tell me again your your first wet grinder and i i thought i remembered hearing you you had bought a second one or something like that or am i am i way off base
29:41
you're gonna get that too and it was like a whole big production guy was just like you know he just could not wrap the his head around the fact that we were that we wouldn't help him individually and you know who the hell are we to not help someone in this
29:54
community i i would challenge what arbert said before uh that it's smart for them to ask us or any of us or however And that ties in with the second thing Albert said.
30:08
I think it's long term.
30:10
It's not smart because it just shows that you as the person asking with a very high chance, lack creativity and problem solving skills.
30:20
And if you don't have that, you will just not be any competition.
30:23
And that also for me telling people how I do certain things gives me a bit peace of mind because I'm thinking, okay, And I'm not talking about other knife makers I'm friends with.
30:35
I have chats with Tobias Hunger and I don't know you guys about technical things potentially all the time, but we are in a very specialized and deep topic then.

No, you go
19:47
Yeah.
19:50
I mean, I was on sick leave for the first time since my self-employment, I think.
19:53
Maybe I had the shits one time and stayed off one day.
19:57
But nothing serious.
19:58
But this time, how long did I...
20:03
I think I was at home for three days or something like that.
20:05
Maybe a week.

16 MINS LATER

35:48
Have you changed the way, I mean, are you going to have the keys now be different material or what's your plan for making sure that doesn't happen again?
