From what you learned in writing your story, how did the Manab school end up on this final end list of targets?

Well, Jake, yeah, that's a great question.

It's something that we set out to try to understand over the past six months.

The context you laid out is really important.

When we look back, we're looking at, at least in terms of child casualties, the deadliest american military targeting error of the 21st century so there's a lot of folks who are seeking answers and accountability it's not just the the families of the children these seven eight nine year old girls and boys who were killed who are seeking these answers so as we sought to reconstruct why the u.s military would attack an iranian school we were both trying to understand what pentagon investigators were finding as well as other sources with knowledge of the events And the Pentagon investigators have identified, as you said, a cascade of preventable failures.

This includes both intelligence issues from the Defense Intelligence Agency, a misclassification, still identifying the site as an IRGC naval facility, but also outdated imagery and an overreliance in artificial intelligence in the form of Maven Smart System, which is made by Palantir Technologies.

Of course, another wrinkle to this is the reductions in civilian harm mitigation personnel since the Trump administration took office.
