Ponzi scheme is an investment scam where no actual investing happens.

It's basically just a smokescreen of fake returns aimed at luring in more and more investors.

People are promised high returns, but their money is used to either pay off earlier investors or, in most cases, fund a really lavish lifestyle for the person who owns the investment fund.

It is a complete fraud.
