When a doctor prescribes that but can't really tell you where your pain's coming from, how should a patient handle that? Like w-what, what should they say? What questions should they follow up with?

Becca KennedyGUEST
I mean, I've been a physician for 25 years, so we used to prescribe opiates for, you know, decades, never gabapentin.

Becca KennedyGUEST
But then once we stopped prescribing opiates, then gabapentin became the new medicine that was just used for everything.

Becca KennedyGUEST
And, you know, it's sort of thought to lower the pain threshold, work sort of neurologically, but it's prescribed for so many different things.

Becca KennedyGUEST
I mean, it's prescribed for chronic pain, but it's also sometimes prescribed for anxiety or depression, or I've seen it prescribed for insomnia and, you know, all of these different things.

Becca KennedyGUEST
And when a medicine is prescribed for lots and lots of different symptoms, you know, it really begs the question, what is the chemical mechanism? And, you know, is there-- like, what exactly are we treating? Like, what are you treating? What do you think is going on in the body that you think that the gabapentin is treating? And I guess, you know, it's those sort of questions that I think that is important to-- for patients to ask their physician.

Can you-- From a doctor's perspective, can you talk about how a trauma like this and the emotional, um, response the nervous system has to it can sensitize the nervous system or cause these pains to persist even in a healthy body?
