was part of this long process you simply waiting for inspiration and experimenting a lot and waiting until something was truly great in your opinion because it has to be great or why put it out

what kind of like i mean there's um there was a time period from around about how it took so long where i really after being in la in the thunderpuss years and you know being in the depths of all that which those years were in in many different ways bigger than con can um working with all these gigantic huge la producers and stuff and all that so by the time i got out of there i wanted to get the farthest away from la as i possibly could and i didn't even want to do music anymore i just had so much uh i was just really fed up so i really shut off and i did something else for about five years just that was totally non-music related and um I eventually it was like, I can't not do music.

It just, you know, as you know, it's just in your DNA.

Try trying to run an escape from yourself.

I was so sick of the music scene, so sick of the DJing and the drug scene and how nasty all that was.

And I was just, oh, get me back out into the country and get me away from all of this madness.

So that was part of it.

So Barry, if you can, can you take us back to the beginning? How did you first form Kon Kan, and what was the original vision for the band?

Well, the, the original vision was never a band.

It was, it, uh, was the '80s, m- MIDI.

It was, it was at a point by the late '80s, I started toying with by, um...

Well, I was always toying with samplers and stuff, even '85, '86, and there was, that was the beginning of all the MIDI era.

So by '87, '88, you could g- And at the beginning of house music with drum machines and syncing up keyboards and stuff, all around '86 or so.

So around that time you could go in and you could, um, make your own record all by yourself.
