So to start with, what exactly are these parking requirements that we're talking about in this report, and how did they come about?

Ashleigh ChangGUEST
So when we're talking about parking requirements, we're referring to the rules that state and local governments set which essentially mandate how much parking builders must build with every new home.

Ashleigh ChangGUEST
So usually they take the form of minimums, so a planning scheme might say for a one-bedroom apartment, you must build one space.

Ashleigh ChangGUEST
Some councils, like the City of Sydney, Canada Bay, Waverley, have actually switched to maximums instead and dropped those minimums altogether.

Ashleigh ChangGUEST
So to give you a sense of what those minimums might look like, on average in Sydney we find that a one-bedroom apartment typically comes with 0.6 spaces on average, and that goes up to 0.9 for a two-bedder, and then, uh, 1.3 for a three-bedroom apartment.
