Um, I- there were a lot of clients that were coming in, um, and, uh, you know, having studied dietetics and running in weight-loss clinics and, and bariatric surgery, I, I felt like I was giving the best kind of care available.

Aoife McMahonGUEST
Uh, and at the same time, there were several patients, a significant proportion of the patients, who weren't getting what they wanted from the intervention.

Aoife McMahonGUEST
Um, so many patients weren't expecting the weight loss that we would have anticipated at that point in time.

Aoife McMahonGUEST
Um, and I also noticed that people were becoming, some people were becoming more focused on the scales, what it means, um, would come into the clinic room and hop on the scales, and whether it went up or stayed the same or went down, that would dictate the entire session.

Aoife McMahonGUEST
Um, and you know, initially I thought, "Okay, am I doing something wrong here?" You know, "Is this something to do with what I'm doing?" And then I started looking to the research and, and realizing that actually weight-loss medications at the time, weight-loss interventions, uh, you know, as we all have done, us working this sphere, um, we kind of started to see the wood from the trees, and that it's not actually straightforward, that the, the panacea of weight loss, you know, it's, it's, it's...

Are you able to share for what you've noticed with those side effects and people that you've supported?

Aoife McMahonGUEST
And just to reiterate what you're saying as well, my approach, and I think we'd probably be quite similar, is it's very high autonomy approach.

Aoife McMahonGUEST
I'm not someone who is making you take these medications and I am not forcing you to stop these medications.

Aoife McMahonGUEST
And I think it's really important that people feel in the driving seat of their care.

Aoife McMahonGUEST
And part of that is sharing information about these drugs and why doing a podcast like this can be really helpful with that as well.

Aoife McMahonGUEST
In terms of how this can show up for people who are on the medications, I think it's really worth, if possible, I mean, I started off by saying again that these drugs are everywhere.
