You know, as a salon owner, when I first opened my business, I rolled up my sleeves and I worked really hard, and all the money went into the till, and at the end of the week, you know, you'd, you'd pay all the bills out of the y- checking account, et cetera, and you'd hope there was money left.

Antony WhitakerGUEST
And fortunately, uh, in varying degrees there was, but there was never any great science behind it.

Antony WhitakerGUEST
I was like so many salon owners, where you sort of worked on the principle of work hard, bank all the money, and, uh, you know, pay all the bills a- and hope there's some profit left over.

Antony WhitakerGUEST
And for me, I was probably, you know, two years in, uh, to, to salon ownership, and I went to an event, uh, an industry event, and there was a, a gentleman on stage who was a successful salon owner.

Antony WhitakerGUEST
He had half a dozen salons, and he was doing a little presentation, um, and h- he started talking about benchmarks, and I'd never really understood what a benchmark was at that point in time.

I mean, the way that you were in the 70s or whatever, and the relationship that you had to work, the relationship you had with your boss, etc., was a very different type of relationship to what you have today, whether it's with your parents or with employers, etc., And I don't begrudge, you know, Gen Z or any generation of the changes that they want.

Antony WhitakerGUEST
Every generation sees different opportunities to work and live in a different way.

Antony WhitakerGUEST
And when you threw, it was happening anyway, but when you threw COVID in the mix, I think it really made every generation sort of sit back and think about, well, hang on.

Antony WhitakerGUEST
Do I really want to work Saturdays? Do I want to work nights? What is the work-life balance all about? And this goes off into all sorts of social implications about the economy because when I was starting out in hairdressing, it was a very realistic thing to go, hey, I'm going to put a deposit down or no deposit.

And that's a great dotted line to your next item, which is changes in consumer expectations, because that you in a way dotted line directly to what you're talking about, because consumer expectations have a lot to do with a lot of things, including price.
