Rachel HandleyHOST
We're not necessarily saying how do you treat ADHD? How do you treat a common mental health problem in this context? But could you, is it possible to give us a brief explanation about how challenges associated with ADHD develop and are maintained? And we always say without repetition, hesitation, deviation, boxes, arrows or other visual aids.

Antonia DittnerGUEST
Well I will do my best to rise to the challenge but so well with anyone we start thinking about the challenges don't we the things that brought them to therapy the things they'd like support with so let's say we're talking about things like turning up late snapping at significant others missing deadlines those sorts of very characteristic ADHD challenges and that people bring.

Antonia DittnerGUEST
So we'd start by acknowledging those, and then we would say, well, it can be helpful to think about the things that contributed to those challenges in the first instance.

Antonia DittnerGUEST
So starting with the things that contributed, on the one hand we have what we might term predispositions we can also think of those perhaps as the sort of biological factors if you like but one way to think about those are these are things that we think have probably always been there they're things that people would have described about them from an early stage as long as they knew them and they might be things like being scatty being high energy, being emotionally sensitive, excitable, adventurous, chatty, those sorts of things.

Antonia DittnerGUEST
It can be a really nice moment as we're thinking about that with people to think about what are the things you really enjoy about this? Are you imaginative, curious, interested, all of those things? And so it can be a lovely moment to just recognise that this isn't just about the things which are causing problems or even that these are things that it's depending on the context where they might be distressing.

Antonia DittnerGUEST
So then still talking about things that contribute to the challenges, we go on to talk about environment and experience and how those shape us.
