We kept poring through the records and talking to former members and started to understand how, according to church doctrine, forgive and forget actually worked.

You know, the Bible talks about forgiveness, and, and there's a part in the King James Bible that talks about getting forgiveness from another believer and how that sort of washes the sin away, and, and the idea is it's gone.

It's like it never happened.

Uh, we don't talk about it anymore, and, and if you bring it up, it's like you're not letting it go.

You know, the sin kind of falls to you.

You, you have an unforgiving heart, so that's kind of on you now.

And at first, Andy spoke to her for that historical expertise, but then she told Andy her mom, Aija, wanted to share her own story.

Where did you where'd you take your reporting?

Yeah, well, again, I think of investigative reporting as you're trying to answer a question.

And that question that we planted at the end of that story was the question that we had started asking by the time we finished that first story.

So, you know, we had heard about victims and some perpetrators while reporting that other story.

But, you know, I think that I think of, investigative reporting as is you're trying to answer a question or a series of questions and we we kind of planted that question at the end of the story which came up a lot um through our reporting which is like are there others out there um we we had heard about some already but we wanted to set out and just cast as wide of a net as we could and and And talk to as many people as we possibly could.

You know, people who are experts, people who are in the church, people who are out of the church, and other people who have been victims of sexual abuse.

And we wanted to understand why and how that happened.

But yeah, tread carefully, but talk as much or as little as you'd like about that.

And when you're talking about these forgiveness sessions, kind of the word you're using to describe what's happening here, how far back does that go? When did the church start doing those?

I don't think I can answer that question with any sort of specificity, but...

I talked to a woman who is 85 years old, lives in Ontario, Canada.

When she was nine years old in 1951, her family came from Finland to start the first apostolic church in Canada.

We found this newspaper picture that shows her and her large family and her father in Halifax at the port, just like just gotten off the boat.
