I was about to ask actually, so should there be worrying numbers from the PSA blood test and further tests are required? What do those entail? Is it then growing blood and then you look for other indicators in the bloodstream?
3:18
So they will do some ratios using those PSA results.
3:23
They'll look at the size of your prostate.
3:24
They'll do an ultrasound on you and look at your size, and then they'll divide the PSA by the size of the prostate.
3:32
Often nowadays they'll do what's called a multi-parametric MRI scan.
3:37
It's been quite a game-changer.
3:39
It's very useful because that will show whether there are any suspicious areas within the prostate.
4:30
we have some amazing oncology departments in the public health sector um i wonder though how much of the services available if you like given the fact that the majority of um or the prevalence of prostate cancer in black men particularly might be affecting those in poor areas
0:52
Is your experience leading the foundation, or rather in that experience, what is that biggest mental barrier stopping South African men from getting tested? Is it fear of diagnosis, maybe lack of symptoms? Are there traditional taboos around men's health?
1:10
I think the biggest fear was the dreaded finger up the rectum.
1:14
which was used to be part of screening.
1:16
It's no longer required if men are not having symptoms.
1:18
And I think men still think if they go for screening, the doctor's going to do that digital rectal examination, and they're terrified of that, even though it's actually just 20 seconds of minor discomfort.
1:29
Men need to stop worrying about that.
1:30
Screening is now just a simple PSA blood test.
6:02
How have modern treatment options and surgical techniques advanced to preserve quality of life after diagnosis? So
8:13
I mean, is it a, a genetic thing that's triggered by a dietary issue, climate? W- what do we know?
8:20
So unfortunately, the reality is we don't know what causes prostate cancer, so we can't put in a preventative strategy for this disease, which is a major challenge.
8:29
We, we can, with so many other cancers, we can tell you what to do to prevent getting that cancer.
8:35
So with colorectal cancer, for example, there's certain dietary factors.
8:39
Have a higher fiber diet, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.
8:43
Um, stay off too much red meat and processed meat.
8:46
It's not the case with prostate cancer.

Um, Tshepo in Mobapane says, uh, "How successful is brachytherapy or prostate intervention?" Um, and that's from Tshepo in Mobapane.
