I'm not pretending it wasn't difficult.

Um, I didn't shut our school, and I, I made the point on the show before that, uh, i- I'm not saying that every school should have stayed open or every school should have shut.

I think headteachers had to be given the autonomy to make the decision on their circumstances, and our circumstances were, yes, it was hot, um, yes, it was difficult, but I felt that it was important to stay open because I felt our young people who came to school learnt lessons they wouldn't have otherwise learnt, which is it's hot.

But the children who didn't come to school on those days, they came back to school sunburnt.

They, they were still hot, whereas the children in school were in classes, they were learning, they were being hydrated, they were being fed, they were being taught that actually you get on with it because in that heat, like I said before, farmers, nurses, doctors, police, they all have to get on with it.

And this generation, Generation Z, Generation Alpha, are saying that this current culture has let them down.

They are thirsting for something.

They're full of curiosity but lack of understanding.

They want something more.

They think they've been denied an inheritance.

Ten years ago, if you asked them to come to church, they'd say no.

Yeah, so I think, do you think schools then have got, or what's happened in education is partly responsible for this self-obsessive sort of, yeah, theme?

and I think it is it's that safety that comes from knowing exactly where you are so what what were the kind of the first three things that you thought were the things that you needed to do at Caldecott when you first arrived

I think if I take them in terms of the students, the staff and the parents, in terms of the students, the students needed to know that no means no.

They need to know.

I remember when I first came here, there was a bit of an incident in one of the lessons and I had to exclude two boys.

And the medic came to the school with him the next day and said, you're not excluding him.

And I said, well, I've excluded him.

No, you're not.
