Can a NASA astrophysicist believe in God?… With Dr Alex Merson
G
7:04GrahamHOST
Does that shape how you do your science? Does it shape your work as a scientist within that organization? I'm just curious about the dynamics of being a Christian working at somewhere like NASA.
A
7:14Alex MersonGUEST
I think in terms of doing the process of scientific method, scientific investigation, I don't think it really makes that much difference.
A
7:25Alex MersonGUEST
As in, I could sit down with colleagues and we can analyze the latest results from the simulation and say, oh, does it Does it seem to fit the data? What do we think it's saying? I guess in terms of being a Christian, I guess it's then having that, I mean, I think you used the word earlier, the worldview.
A
7:42Alex MersonGUEST
It's a different worldview of, right, what is the purpose to all this? What is behind all this? And...
A
7:50Alex MersonGUEST
You know, many colleagues, you know, from the conversations I've had with people, I guess would be, you know, there are some other Christians there.

Is that a faith in itself? Do you think that feels similar to what you were saying as a Christian is a faith?
LONGER VERSION | Can a NASA astrophysicist believe in God?… With Dr Alex Merson
G
6:12GrahamHOST
I mean, is that true? And I guess in maybe just sort of simple terms, how can we think about dark matter, dark energy? What is that? How
A
6:20Alex MersonGUEST
do we understand that? So I think, yeah, the latest, as far as I'm aware, kind of the latest current theories are saying that is still, that is correct.
A
6:35Alex MersonGUEST
It is kind of, it stems from, I mean, I can take each one in turn and say dark matter, for example, that it stems from But both dark matter and dark energy stem from strange observations that were made.
A
6:49Alex MersonGUEST
So dark matter, for example, I guess in the 20th century, various astronomers, they found very strange measurements in the observations of galaxies or clusters of galaxies.
