I guess there's three components that come together to create a situation where dandruff occurs.
Alex GeorgeGUEST
Number one, you have oil on your scalp, which everyone has, and that's normal and it's natural.
Alex GeorgeGUEST
The second component you need is the yeast, which feeds upon the oil and causes the inflammation.
Alex GeorgeGUEST
So some people are more susceptible to it than others, i.e. the process of the yeast consuming the oils, creating them these fatty acids that they produce causes like an irritation of that scalp.

So if you had some words of advice to any parents listening now, what would you say? How can they calm and comfort their teen or somebody else who's stressed about looking

And, and the reason is, is basically I didn't sleep as a baby, and this is very common with neurodivergent kids, especially ADHD kids.
Alex GeorgeGUEST
But the only thing that really put me to sleep is when they put the hairdryer on.
Alex GeorgeGUEST
So my mum would, like, wash her hair, right? And I'd be on the bed or wherever I was, and I'd go to sleep.
Alex GeorgeGUEST
So she realized that I would sleep well with a hairdryer, and that transcended to, um, when I was even very young.

And now, interestingly, I do exactly what, you know, you talk about in the book and what those psychologists have told you, where I can-- my, my little girls can come home crying, and I don't fix it.

Zoe BlaskeyHOST
What's your experience been like with processing and learning how to feel your feelings? Is that something that you had to learn? How did you learn it, and how would you coach a parent through learning that?
A
2:36Alex GeorgeGUEST
Yeah, I mean, your children are very fortunate to have someone that's a pa- a mum that is kind of so introspective and able to kind of work on that stuff.
A
2:42Alex GeorgeGUEST
'Cause, uh, ultimately, I can't remember the exact saying, but the, the stuff that you don't work on, you just pass on to the next generation, right? So we've gotta deal with our own stuff.
A
2:50Alex GeorgeGUEST
And even if it's not our fault necessarily, we've gotta deal with it so that we don't pass it on, so we pass on the right stuff.

If you, you know, other people start understanding you and how you are, and even in your own life you can go, "Am I...
Alex GeorgeGUEST
As someone that knows they have ADHD, does it make sense to work in an office 9:00 to 5:00 where I can't move, can't be outside? Or maybe I should use this skill set," 'cause there are brilliant skills that come with it.
Alex GeorgeGUEST
We do have that part of our brain that kind of looks at the world in a different way.
