it's very hard to define there are certain things you control the mixing and the mastering there are certain ways to give more energy to a record when it's recorded that makes it more of the moment and you know in production things can sound very dated everything has comes around in cycles certain production methods certain tones certain drum machines that are there's a cycle, 30, 40 year cycle things sort of come back around the quality of a recording changes and you can sort of remaster and sometimes you'll hear records from the 60s that are sonically way superior to things that you'll hear today and vice versa some people really focus on those but that's not the song, that's just the way the song is presented there are certain melodies that are ancient melodies that are used still to this day, certain patterns that are recycled and chord structures that are timeless.

Alex ClareGUEST
The melody from the hymn Amazing Grace, those melodies are way older than the songs that we know.

Alex ClareGUEST
They're melodies that have been around for a very, very long time that people were singing.
