How the past can help us face the future - Alessandro De Arcangelis

But before we talk maybe a bit about that, can we talk a bit about what history of political thought is and what that is, what the study is, what you're looking at, what the hopes and the intentions behind it are?
6:00
Yeah, so at its simplest, I would say the history of political thought is a discipline that tries to understand how people in different periods made sense of politics in society.
6:12
So it's basically the history of ideas in their historical contexts.
6:17
So it looks at the changing meaning of concepts like, I don't know, power, autonomy, liberty, the state, but even things like progress, political change.
6:27
So it asks how those ideas were shaped by the historical contexts in which people lived before.
6:33
But the part, the sort of subsection, so to speak, of that discipline that fascinated me the most was the relationship between political ideas and people's understanding of history and the future.
6:47
Obviously, we're going to talk a lot about the future today because that resonates immensely with my current role in Louis Silkin.

So what were the themes? Can you recall the themes that were identified? And I think it'll be really interesting then to see how the extent to which they shift in the next report that's going to be released and if they shift at all.
