It's like a Greatest Hits of Tudor executioner.
17:20
It is, yeah.
17:21
I mean, some of the great names of British history.
17:23
We've got Margaret of Salisbury.
17:26
She was an elderly woman.
17:28
She was hacked to death in her last moments by an inexperienced executioner.
17:33
Oh, my God.

21 MINS LATER

38:17
What can he tell us about the Casemates?
12:27
And the fact that you started with the gentle stuff, which was not being able to stand up in a room that's too small for you and starvation, I was already wincing.
12:35
There is actually a description of someone being tortured at the tower, a man called John Gerard, who was here as a prisoner in 1597.
12:43
He was a Jesuit priest.
12:45
He became implicated himself in the gunpowder plot.
12:48
He was the priest who administered the sacrament after the plotters had taken their oath.
12:55
He was one of our famous escapees of the tower, but before escaping, he'd been tortured, and he afterwards wrote a description of it.
13:03
He was hung from his wrists by manacles, so suspended from the ceiling.
15:30
Was James I open to any of that?
43:34
How does he get from the banqueting house and out onto the scaffold?
43:38
Yes, so although Banqueting House sort of stands alone now and without a palace around it.
43:46
The banqueting house actually connected directly into the apartments that Charles himself used.
43:52
And you could walk into this space through a door from the south end and through it.
43:59
This of course brings us to the knotty question of the window that he walked out of.
44:04
There are eyewitness accounts of Charles's execution that say that a window had been taken out of the banqueting house in order that he could walk straight from the main hall of the banqueting hall, and this is an elevated hall, we're on the first floor effectively of the building, out onto this scaffold.
44:23
Now there's been a lot of debate about which window exactly that was.
48:41
But actually, Charles conducts himself quite calmly all throughout this process, doesn't he?
