Our Dharma talk this evening will be offered by Alan Richardson Sensei.

This is a koan, a teaching story from the Japanese collection, "Entangling Vines." So this is "Entangling Vines" case sixty-five, a man or a person in a thousand-foot well.

A monk asked Xixuang Xingang, "What is the meaning of Bodhidharma coming from the West?" The master answered, "Let's say there's a man in a thousand-foot well.

Get him out without using any rope, and I'll answer you about the meaning of the patriarchs coming from the West." The monk said, "But in Hunan now, there's a priest named Chang, who freely explains all kinds of things to people." Thereupon, Xingang s-summoned the novice, Jizi, who turns out to, to later be Yangshan Weiji.

He summoned the novice Jizi and said, "Get this corpse out of here." Later, Weiji, uh, the, the attendant, later Weiji asked Danyuan Yingzhen, "How would one get the man out of the well?" Danyuan re-retorted, "Dolt, blockhead, who's in a well?" Weiji didn't understand, and later put the same question to Guishan Lingyo, Lingyou.

Guishan shouted out, "Weiji." "Yes," Weiji answered.

That was actually provided through the local authority.

That started with companionship, which, I mean, became very, very important because that companionship meant that I could have a little bit of a break.

And when I had that break, the care person that came in wanted to know the interests of my late mother.

And she loved cats.

And on the second visit that that person did, that home care worker, she brought in some books on cats, which she actually got from the library for her.

Could you describe a little bit more about what it's like being part of this study as a lived expert?

Mm.

And it's, it's a really difficult one for someone like Finney, as I said, um, because you want him to strive to bowl 88, 90, 92, 95 miles an hour.

You want him to do that because that's game changing, that's world-class.

But if you get something minuscule wrong in your action trying to bowl at 92 miles an hour, you are gonna leak a little bit straight, a little bit wide, a little bit full, a little bit short.

So how-- what do we want? Do we want Finney to now bowl at 85, 86 miles an hour and dob it on a length a little bit better? You know, that, that wasn't what we wanted to do.

So we just-- I think we just went around, it was a while back now, Finney, but I think we went around just trying to clean up your action a little bit, just try and make it a little bit more eco- economical if we can.

There was no way we were ever gonna try and drop pace.
