4Lads Special - In conversation with Colin Stewart
C
11:29Colin StewartGUEST
I can remember going up there when Bomber was under-18s manager, and I stood at the side of the pitch with him before the game.
C
11:35Colin StewartGUEST
I said, right, who do you think is going to make it here? And he looked around and says, right, that big skinny guy, skinny lad at right back, and it was Alan Hutton.
C
11:43Colin StewartGUEST
and he looked around and he said this guy here left left midfield and it was charlie adam uh and there was uh ross mccaskill up front um and tom brightman tom brighton yeah he went to went to millwall and uh and had a good career you know so out of that one team there were four guys who came through and and obviously i you know i remember you know the mccrory brothers at age eight i remember um Gilmore and Patterson playing in the same team from under eights right up under and they jumped from under eights to tens to twelves to sixteens you know because they were fast tracked so we always benefit when there's one or two key players coming through and Finlay again I've known Finlay for a long time through the ranks and Finlay always had this I remember going to see a game up closed doors and he he came off and I said to one of the coaches afterwards I said oh Finlay had a quiet game today and he said he scored a hat trick I said, did he? And Finlay's been that kind of player through, he just appears and scores and you think he's had a quiet game, but he's been really effective, you know.
C
12:49Colin StewartGUEST
So, you know, we're delighted with Finlay just now.
C
17:10Colin StewartGUEST
So for Nathan to develop...
C
17:13Colin StewartGUEST
he had to go away you know and of course you know the club benefited financially from that so you know and i think one thing a lot of fans maybe don't realize perhaps is whenever we sell it whenever a young player leaves us quite often we get a fee for him you know you know we you know some players go away and it's all maybe not realizing that players left etc we get development fees etc so You know, it's become a bit of a business for us.
C
17:41Colin StewartGUEST
You know, you look at the Chelsea and Arsenal, you know, a lot of clubs is a profitable part of the business, you know, and you only really need one or two every few years, like Nathan Paterson, you know, Alan Hutton, for example, you know.
C
17:57Colin StewartGUEST
you can you can you can profit that you know and that's where clubs like Chelsea maybe sign players who I don't think they've got any great intention of playing them in the first team but they know they'll make money on that player because it's a business and it's a recognised part of the part of the club you know and I think that's where we are as well we've got we've got a lot of players over the years we've we've made money on good money you know and as you quite rightly say there that Scotland squad well There's four or five Rangers players who came through our academy in that team playing for Scotland.
