Poll taxes were actually the most common form of it in the South, okay? 'Cause that's where a lot of this took place, was that Black people who wanted to participate in their duly sponsored constitutional right to vote, had to, before they could cast their vote, do whatever the person managing the polls wanted them to do.

Because of that, Black people in the South, recognizing the importance of the right to vote and what that could do for them as representation, created what's called freedom schools.

And what they did was they taught the Constitution as well as the other documents that framed this country, because that's what was used against them.
