So I guess the question for you is what do you see in the relationship that we're talking about, right? Eating disorders and sexual trauma.

So if I bring it back, and then I'll zoom it back into the eating disorders and sexual trauma, when I hear the, the realm of kind of disordered eating and sexuality, they are both inherently body-based experiences that rest on our capacity to honor our wants, which requires our interceptive awareness.
A
21:41Ailey JolieGUEST
And if we, as we just spoke about, live in a society that is doing everything possible to remove us from our interceptive awareness, which is our capacity to feel inside our very own body, to be connected to our hunger, desire, wants, yes, no, all of these things, they have a somatic and sensory component to them.
A

If that has been systematically disconnected from us, we won't have that orientation to know I want this type of food, or I want this type of touch.
A
22:13Ailey JolieGUEST
And so for me, I'm like, if you struggle with one of those, you absolutely struggle with the other, 'cause both are deeply connected to pleasure.

Could you explain what led you to go into this? And also, in really simple terms, what is a somatic psychotherapist?
A
3:11Ailey JolieGUEST
So I will define somatic psychotherapist just so that people understand what I do and how it's maybe different.
A
3:18Ailey JolieGUEST
So a somatic psychotherapist is trained clinically in the same way a regular psychotherapist would be trained.
A
3:23Ailey JolieGUEST
So we are trained to listen to stories, to know how to process trauma, to weave cognitive narratives together, to reframe.
A
3:32Ailey JolieGUEST
But we also have additional skill set of both listening to the story that someone is saying through their words, but also the story of the body.
