So you've got a maj- major big airway, the trunk, uh, the trachea, the breathing pipe, and then it splits, uh, into two lungs, and there are 22 branches.

And where the leaves hang out, the alveoli is where the gas exchange is.

What happens in asthma, um, is that, uh, there's usually a trigger, um, and our airways look like this, like a hose pipe, and what happens is there's a trigger, the airways will shut down.

Um, so if you imagine a garden hose, you know, as a kid you're, you're always pressing your thumb on a garden hose-

Mm-hmm.

To make the diagnosis, it's really age dependent.

Um, so in older children it's much easier.

Yeah.

And, and so this was the mid-'90s, and people were starting to talk about gene therapy.

And so I, I knew that at the Brompton and Imperial College, there was a, um, whole program for gene therapy, uh, commencing.

So I went to him and said I wanted to do research in cystic fibrosis and gene therapy particularly.

And at the time he said, "Look, there isn't a position.

Um, when...

Will you do asthma?" And I remember saying, "Look, I, I'm really interested in cystic fibrosis.

Mm

[laughs] And if you contrast that to then to now, kind of what's changed and what should people be aware of kind of moving into 2026?

You know, when I got into this space, it was, you know, very much the, the Wild West.

You know, Facebook Gaming was kind of at its peak.

You still had a lot of the kind of web platforms like Pogo and Yahoo Games and Spiegel Games, you know, these sort of flash-based and, in some cases, like HTML, HTML5 wasn't even really a thing then, um, type web, you know, portals.

Um, there was no mobile at that time.

You know, it was still kind of WAP devices and things like that.

And, you know, App Store really had, had...
