So when I go to register to vote, how do election officials verify who I am and that I'm actually eligible to vote?
11:13
Sure.
11:14
So there's existing federal law, uh, called HAVA, H-A-V-A, that sets requirements for how it is that people are registered to vote around the country, and then each state has additional laws for how people are eligible to vote and how that process works.
11:31
The combination of those two things in the state of California means that when you go to register to vote in California, and you're submitting either a paper form or you're registering, like, online through DMV or another online voter registration site, that you're gonna submit your name, last four digits of your Social Security number or your California state ID.
11:52
If you don't have those under California law, you can submit something else that identifies you, and short of all of that, the state also can assign you a unique identifying number as a voter.

The information you submit is then, like, vetted and checked against Social Security Administration, Department of Motor Vehicles.
12:12
Ways that they verify who you are based on what you've submitted, and that's how you get to be on the voter registration rolls.

Tell me about that conversation.
