And so where do you draw the line between shocking readers for the sake of shock and using disturbing material to tell a genuinely compelling story?

I don't write to shock people.

I just write to set the mood and set the pace.

It's like I'm not out to shock people for the shock of it.

I write a story that I would like to read myself.

The type of, it's like if I, it's like with my gift books, it's like a lot of it's torture and stuff like that.

Because basically the people who are given the gift are usually victims of somebody, of something where they're allowed to do anything they want to that person for a period of five days.
