Every time the stage manager calls a cue or presses a button, they have the director's vision in mind.

It's about like when this character in this emotional moment is about to do this action that leads to this, or even when they are doing this action, but the timing varies every night.

You are always making a creative decision because it depends upon you understanding what is the goal of the designer? What is the goal of the director in this? What do we want the end product to be? If I understand that, I can work on how to achieve that because I know what these different elements do and I understand how they work.

Other people's perceptions of stage managers has definitely changed over the course of my career, or at least my experience of other people's perceptions have changed.

Back when I was an undergrad, there was very much the, oh yeah, all the respect for the stage manager who is the superman who's going to come in and save us and do everything and they never sleep.

And I think there are 100% still places, people, environments where that is the case.

But I think there has been an overall shift of perception of work and labor in general and how that also does actually apply to theater.
