So I think that's kind of a nice segue into what today's podcast episode's gonna be about.
Because if you've been following me on Instagram, you've probably seen me talking about this a bit, and I thought it warranted its own fucking whole podcast episode because this skinny trend that is all over my For You page right now, it is going to put women into an early grave, and I think we need to talk about it, okay? So today we are doing a full deep dive into this fucking phenomenon that is just sweeping pop culture, and I cannot explain how much it breaks my heart to see this happening again.
As someone who literally, I grew up in the thick of the '90s era of fucking supermodel skinny, heroin chic, um, you know, magazines slating women for having any sort of fat on their body and the just celebrating thinness and being small and losing weight.
Like, do you have any idea how hard, how hard I have had to work to heal my inner child in this respect and to be okay with feel, like, to actually feel the way I feel now about my body when it's not super small, it's not super skinny? I have had to work so hard to get to this point and to be okay with being strong and with taking up space, and it literally feels like society has just come around and is like, "Nah, fuck that.
Fuck all of that," okay? And, like, I just, it is killing me, okay? So I just want you to consider this episode is basically my fucking takedown of skinny talk 'cause I just can't.
I want to discuss why this is so harmful, not just for women now, but for all of us in the future.
Because the way we are treating our bodies now in our 20s and in our 30s, it is going to directly impact how our bodies function when we're in our 70s, when we're in our 80s, and maybe in our 90s, maybe in our 100s if we get to, you know, live that long, right? And a huge piece of this conversation in particular is why resistance training is just so fucking crucial and why we all need to be doing it.
And the skinny trend is basically saying, you know, we should avoid lifting weights.
And I'm not anti, you know, yoga and running and Pilates, but every human should be doing, like, weight, weightlifting, right? And I am pissed at any movement that- ...
I am pissed at any movement that talks about, "I was so bulky and then I started doing Pilates and I, like, became so much less puffy and ba, ba, ba." No, I can't.
I went to a Pilates class a few weeks ago and all I could think about was just how the whole narrative of, like, being small and lithe and skinny.
I don't know if she even realized that that was sh- what, what she was pushing, but, like, she was pushing it heavy.
She was like, "I was just, yeah, my body was so stressed and inflamed when I was lifting weights, and then I started doing Pilates and I was just so small and skinny." And I was just like, "What?" Like, you've got no muscle on your body.
It's, th- this is why I wanted to do a whole podcast episode on it, because there's so many different aspects of it, right? On the one hand, I think everyone should be allowed to look how they wanna look.
Like, I, I genuinely feel like my mission in life, my reason for being put on this fucking planet is to help girls fall in love with training, okay? Fall in love with being strong.
