We in the Protestant Christian tradition have been warned off the use of physical objects, particularly images, in worship or in prayer.
That's out of an attempt to honor the commandment to make no graven image, that we might be confused as to what is God and what is not.
And that's all well and good.
And yet objects and images can be helpful tools, facilitators to point and put us in touch with God or the sacred, the divine, spirit.
They can even help us recognize the great presence that is indeed in the ordinary, so we need not be afraid of them.
Other traditions have known this, have not been so afraid, so untrusting of our discernment.
Now you could do this in any number of ways, as is almost always the case.
There is no one right way or wrong way.
And you may start something today that you change tomorrow.
That's okay.
Go with whatever works.
And don't let a performative perfectionism stand in the way.
They call it practice for a reason.
