We're diving back into our mailbag to answer more of your burning sharky questions! In this episode we address all sorts of fascinating queries such as how bioluminescence evolved in sharks, which…
James LeaGuest[upbeat music] Hello, everyone, and welcome back to World of Sharks, a podcast all about sharks, rays, and the ocean that they call home, brought to you by the Save Our Seas Foundation.
I'm your host, Isla, and this episode is part two of this season's Ask Us Anything.
Usually, I sit down with an expert in shark science and marine conservation and discuss a particular topic, but every so often we like to do these kind of quick fire episodes where we ask you to send in all your burning questions about sharks, and I try to answer them to the very best of my scientific ability.
And this time, I had help from Dr. James Lee, who not only is our amazing CEO of the Save Our Seas Foundation, but is also a very accomplished shark scientist in his own right, and handily loves talking about sharks just as much as I do.
Honestly, listeners, this is one of our shared passions in life, [laughs] just researching and nerding out about sharks, and we always have such a great time when we're doing it.
So much so, in fact, that when I went up to James with this long list of questions, we actually ended up chatting for over two and a half hours, [laughs] which is why we split this episode into two parts.
I'll pop a link in the episode description, so you can go and listen to that if you haven't already.
If you sent in a question and it's not covered here, it'll likely be in that one.
But in part two, in this episode, we address all sorts of fascinating queries such as how bioluminescence evolved in sharks, which species are capable of breathing while they're not swimming, and whether sharks are really older than trees.
Plus, we take deep dives into several awesome species, great white sharks, gray reef sharks, pocket sharks, and of course, James's favorite, the velvet belly lantern shark.
Thank you everyone who took the time to write in and send us a question, and I hope that we've gone some way to solving those curiosities in your mind.
They really allow me to flex my research muscles and dive deep into the literature, and I learn something new every time I do these as well.
So I really hope you guys enjoy listening to us nerding out as much as we enjoyed recording it.
Listeners, we have a lot of information to get through, so strap in, and without further ado, let's dive into our episode.
