Windrixville - An Outsiders Pod
Jun 23, 2026 · 13 min · 12 segments
Most readers remember Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy—but Sodapop Curtis is often overlooked. In this episode of Windrixville, I explore why Sodapop may be the true heart of The Outsiders. From his role…
No entities detected.
If you ask most people what they remember about The Outsiders, they'll tell you about Johnny killing Bob, they'll talk about Ponyboy and Johnny hiding out in the church, about Dolly's desperate last stand, or about Johnny's famous final words telling Ponyboy to stay cold.
These moments have become part of literary history.
They're the scenes that generations of readers remember long after they close the book.
But today I want to talk about someone else.
Someone who doesn't get nearly as much attention as he deserves.
I want to talk about Soda Pop Curtis.
Because while Ponyboy narrates the story, Johnny breaks our hearts and Dally leaves us stunned, Soda Pop quietly holds the entire thing together.
The more times I reread The Outsiders, the more I am convinced that Soda Pop isn't just another member of the gang.
He's the emotional center of the novel.
He's the heart of the Curtis family.
He's the heart of the creatures.
And without him, I'm not sure the story survives.
