Chapter Read-Through: "Sent Home from School"1:32 – 4:46

1:32

Miss Wilder was puzzling everyone in the school.

1:34

From the first day, of course, the boys had been trying to find out how far they could go in n- naughtiness before she made them behave themselves, and no one can understand why she did not show them.

1:45

"Birds in their little nests agree," she said, smiling, and Laura and Ida almost squirmed for embarrassment.

1:50

Besides, that showed she knew nothing about birds.

1:53

Minnie's eyes lit up with excitement, and Ida laughed.

1:57

Ida would be good and gay and laughing no matter what happened, but Mary Power was sober, and Laura was worried.

2:03

She said, "Oh, we must not have trouble in school.

2:05

She must be able to study and get a teacher's certificate." Coming in at, one day at noon, Laura took Carrie to the stove and took off her wraps in the warmth.

2:16

Miss Wilder and Nellie were there talking earnestly together.

2:19

Laura heard Miss Wilder say indi- na- indignantly, "School board," and they both saw her.

2:25

Laura had to sit helpless.

2:27

Carrie went miserably but bravely to the blackboard.

2:30

She was trembling, and she had to wink back tears, but she could not cry.

2:34

She would not cry.

2:36

Laura sat watching her thin hands slowly writing one long line of words and after another.

2:42

Carrie grew pale and paler, but she kept on writing.

2:45

Suddenly, her face went gray, and she hung onto the eraser trough.

2:48

Charlie was signaling her.

2:50

He whispered, "Psst.

2:51

Don't you do it.

2:52

Tell her you won't do it.

2:53

We'll all stand by you." Laura was warmed all through, but the one thing she must not have was trouble in school.

3:00

She smiled and frowned and shook her head at Charlie.

3:02

He sank back, disappointed but quiet.

3:05

Then suddenly, Laura's eye caught a furious grance- glance from Miss Wilder.
