Kishi Bashi on 'Sonderlust' at 10, Creative Boredom, and Surfing for Songwriting Inspiration

What does it feel like to reflect back on a decade of that record?

I mean, besides feeling older and questioning my motivations of late.

Yeah, no, it's great.

It's interesting to see how I've changed and maybe matured.

But also, I don't know, there's like a potency to

what you do when you're young that I could hear.

And then what are you working on right now? Trying to figure out what to work on.

Oh, interesting.

Yeah, I mean, I have, you know, just like you have a long career.

I've, you know, I'm like 15 years now.

So I'm really trying to figure out what inspires me.

And you've played in different lines.

I mean, what's your favorite sort of iteration of the things you've done to be a part of some bigger project, to be all by yourself?

I mean, Kishi Bashi is my solo project.

I used to be in a band called Jupiter One back in the noughts.

Sure.

um and then i was solo since 2012 and so i enjoy doing solo yeah i'm like a control freak maybe a little bit about my music but uh at least in the studio and on stage but uh

i don't know i play with orchestras i like playing with different

uh i like reinterpreting the songs like orchestra or string quartet or like folk band or like a funk band you know this time around it's like a funk band

And then as you wrestle with the idea of what the next project looks like, what does that look like? Are you trying different things out? Are you writing songs and trying to see what they sound like and where it goes?

Well, to be specific, yeah, I guess like I'm trying to figure out, OK, I just turned 50 last year.
