There's a gentleman by the name of Ray Dalio who writes about basically the credit cycles of different countries and how countries evolve from being just little countries to where America is, for example, to being reserve currency type countries.

So what Ray Dalio kind of says is there's a trajectory to how a country becomes a reserve currency and then what happens subsequently.

And in a few steps, basically the first step is they come with a certain technology that makes them more competitive.

That technology allows for them to have disproportionate economic participation in the world.

And then everybody else starts borrowing money, or rather they start borrowing money from everybody in the world because they are the biggest citizen.

trade sort of aggregator in the world and then there's hubris and then they collapse so if you think about the dutch so it's a function of once again the fact that once so like in a place like south southern africa they would come here and they would have stuff to trade but for you to be able to buy that stuff that they were trading with you you needed to have their money
