Ep. 466 | Cool Guns with Ian | Historic Swiss Pistols

Specimen number one, uh, if we will.

This is, uh, the Swiss ordinance model of 1882, okay? So, you know, it looks like a lot of other, uh, sidearms, military sidearms of the time.

Um, it is a single action, double action revolver, but it's gate loading.

It's got this, uh, Abbotti gate loading system, if the camera can see here.

We've got this gate on the side, right? And you've got to, you've got to open that gate, and that's the only way to rotate this cylinder, is actually then by advancing it with the trigger, okay? So this gate, I'll show you guys, this Abbotti gate loading system, it's sort of reminiscent of, like, a single action only, right? But it is a double action, single action revolver, but this is the way you both load the cylinder and also, um, eventually, um, unload it with your sort of conventional ejection rod.

So, uh, you know, this was pre-checked beforehand, you know, not loaded.

So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna pull the trigger here and show you how this cylinder, uh, advances.

So y- you basically rotate it, eject, rotate it, eject, rotate it, eject, and so on.

And the same thing for loading.

You'd load a, load a shell, rotate it, load a shell.

So this disconnects the hammer.

The hammer is totally disconnected when this gate is open.

That's how they can justify, you know, using the trigger as a, as a loading mechanism.

Um, so in terms of gate loading revolvers, this was the fastest-

Yeah

... out there.

There's...

I've never seen one of these.

Okay.

And so-

Yeah

...

this is...

Go on.

I have a lot of things that I wanna say.
